7th. Provincial Assembly of Wessex, hosted by King Hywel of Cornwall No. 69 held in The Masonic Hall, Liskey Hill, Perranporth, Cornwall. TR6 0HR on Saturday 16th. May 2015
The Province of Wessex The Provincial Grand Masters Report for 2014/15 Brethren, I must first thank you all for attending this seventh Annual Assembly of the Province of Wessex. My congratulations to all those Officer’s that I have had the pleasure of appointing and re-appointing today, please remember I aim to reward those who help and serve our Province, and that as we are not yet complete, the Statutes of our Order limit the number of Provincial appointments that I have, both Active and Past. Unlike other Orders’, I am invited, by the Grand Master, to make one or two (depending on the year and overall Membership numbers) recommendations
Proceeding the Provincial meeting the Court held their Installation meeting. The ceremony progressed very smoothly using the new ritual, to the great delight of all involved. This was not surprising as the Province had asked the Assistant Grand Master R.W. Bro. Dr. Christopher W.G.Ansell, GCh, GCSM to take the chair of King Athelstan to perform the ceremony of Installation. The Master elect Bro. Peter T. Emmerson commented after the Ceremony that he was privileged to be involved with the new ritual, and felt honoured that he had been Installed by the Assistant Grand Master in such a faultless way. Continuing after a short break the Provincial Grand Assembly commenced. The Provincial Grand Master R.W.Bro. Malcolm J. Burns, GCSM, greeted all attending and named and thanked those guests from other Provinces that had travelled so far to attend this meeting. The usual business continued then R.W.Bro. Roy Leavers, KSM, SGW, and chairman of Cyningston 10-90 was invited by the Provincial Grand Master to address the brethren with the progress of the appeal. The outcome of the address was that after consideration the Province voted to donate £500.00 from the Province Funds and presented the chairman with a cheque for that amount. (Pictures of the Court and Assemblies including the presentation of the cheque can be viewed by using the link above) A wonderful and interesting talk that was researched & presented by W.Bro. David Attwater, ProvGOrganist entitled “The Halliwell Manuscripts or Regius Poem” The brethren were reminded that they could view the paper in total after logging into the Provincial Web site. Members and visitors then retired to the dining room for an excellent meal.

for consideration by him, for possible appointment to Grand Court Rank. I submit a few paragraphs of what the individual has done for the Province and the Order, with my reasons for submitting that person for such consideration. It is by no means a bygone conclusion that any of my submissions will achieve an appointment. Brethren, please do not think that Grand Rank in this Order is achieved by my patronage. It rests solely with the Grand Master and his executive to ‘give’ this reward. Our growth has been spectacular, both as an Order, and especially as a Province. The Order now has in excess of 3000 Members’. On this subject, our M.W. Grand Master has suggested a period of consolidation, there is no pressure to ‘push’ for new Court’s, if they are achieved then that is most welcome, but not at the expense of any existing Court’s. On the subject of our Court’s, we now have eight Court’s within the Province, as you will see listed in the summons. Your Provincial Executive is, with the help of the Craft PGM of Devon, (R.W.Bro. Ian Kingsbury) and the Grand High Chancellor (R.W.Bro. David Buxton PDGM) beginning ‘new’ relations with the Craft PGM of Dorset, and the new Craft PGM for Wiltshire, with a view to realising our ‘dream’ of having a Court at Dorchester.

I have ‘passed’ the organisation of these last Court’s to our outgoing Provincial Secretary, W.Bro. Mervyn, as he has been the central contact for this, up to now, and has therefore, been “in the thick of it” – and I see no reason to change this. He has my full confidence and authority to talk to, contact, and generally ‘bother’ whom so ever he sees fit, in the pursuit of this aim. We have had the new ritual since January, and as the Assistant Grand Master ‘visualised’, the roll-out continues. We have been very lucky as a Province that R.W.Bro. Chris Ansell, the AGM, has travelled down twice to give us his experience and a question & answer session on this. I am very sorry for you if you have been unable to attend so far. He will do this again for us if we have enough interest and attendees. I remind you Brethren, the new Ritual is to be used exclusively from September 1 st this year. To close, and I hear some sighs of relief, I must again reiterate my grateful thanks to all of you, the Provincial Officer’s, both active and acting, and the Provincial Executive, for being so generous with their time on your behalf. Please also pass on my thanks, and convey my message, to those Brethren that you know who could not be with us today. I will now give the advert for next year’s Provincial Assembly, please put this in your diary’s, it will be held at the Nailsea Masonic Hall, North Somerset, with the Court meeting of The Court of AEpelred No.66 on Saturday 15 th May 2016. I am getting this date in your minds early, so as not to clash with other Order’s and other Masonic commitments, and to ensure a very good attendance from all our Court’s in Wessex. Brethren, I look forward to being with you at your Court’s, especially at each Individual Installation, whenever I can. I look forward to your company at whatever gathering of Athelstan, or any other Order we may be attending, and I look forward to your company after this Assembly. Thank you all for your kind attention, Yours sincerely and fraternally, Malcolm Malcolm J Burns GCSM Provincial Grand Master The Province of Wessex The Masonic Order of Athelstan 16 th May 2015
